Paul Erdos. Every combinatorialist who has been at a recent conference has heard Paul speak on Recent Developments in Combinatorics and Graph Theory. Because of the vast volume and vast scope of his work, he is probably the best known mathematician of our time; he is the one worker in combinatorics (and many other areas) who is known to every mathematician; to many people, he is the very epitome of combinatorics. Eve.n more impressive than Paul's tremendous achievements in research is his knowledge of the work of others, his generosity in sharing ideas with younger colleagues, and his encouragement of scores of beginning researchers. Harold Scott MacDonald Coxeter . Professor Coxeter's work on geometry, especially in the field of projective and non-Euclidean geometry, has established him as the foremost geometer of our time. He gave the impetus to the development of combinatorics in Canada by his appreciation of the importance of design theory and graph theory, and his lectures on finite configurations at Toronto trained a group of Canadian combinatorialists. By his own work, and by bringing Professor W.T. Tutte to Canada, he started up the group of Canadian graph theorists. His fundamental book on finite groups, with W.O.J.
