The Departments of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (MCS) and Computer Science (DCS) are saddened by the loss of Professor Emeritus Rudi Mathon.
Rudolf A. "Rudi" Mathon received his first degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Prague in 1962. He received his MSc and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Toronto in 1972 in the areas of numerical analysis of partial differential equations. In 1972, Mathon joined the tri-campus graduate Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
His research interests were in the area of analysis and design of algorithms for numerical and combinatorial problems. Much of his recent research dealt with combinatorial design theory and its application to various areas of computer science.
Mathon also served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Combinatorial Designs and the Australasian Journal of Combinatorics.
Mathon retired as a Professor Emeritus in 2006 after 34 years at the University.

It will take place from June 3 to 9, 2018 in Arco, Province of Trento, Italy. It will be the 20th edition of this conference held in Italy--the first one in 1981, the second in 1982, and every two years ever since--with the participation of many experts in finite geometries and their applications from all over the world. The main themes of the conference will be Finite Geometries, Incidence Structures, Combinatorial Designs and Graph Theory. Arc
The speakers at the event will be Andrea Burgess, Thaís Bardini Idalino, Hadi Kharaghani , Karen Meagher , Lucia Moura, Mahsa Nasrollahi, Lucas Perin, David Pike, Bidy Razafimahatratra, Emina Soljanin, Jozsef Solymosi, Brett Stevens, Sho Suda, Ethan White, Kyle Chi Hoi Yip . 4th Annual Kliakhandler Conference Graph Decompositions August 9-11, 2018 The 4th annual Kliakhandler Conference will be held August 9-11, 2018 on the campus of Michigan Technological University. The focus of the conference this year will be on graph decompositions. Graph decomposition problems regularly appear in the fields of graph theory, design theory, and algebra and have applications to communication, optimization, and algorithms. The conference will consist of a mix of plenary talks and contributed talks. The conference will also include a special session titled “Everyday Combinatorics”, which will focus on combinatorics at the high school level. A combinatorics specialist with an interest in math education will organize the session, and local high school teachers will be invited to attend the session.
