Dr. Dieter Jungnickel awarded the 2018 Euler Medal of the ICA



Euler Medals recognize distinguished lifetime career contributions to combinatorial research.

Dr. Dieter Jungnickel’s research contributions span a very broad range of areas of discrete mathematics, and are characterized by his constant efforts to explore connections among topics. He has published more than 200 research papers in design theory, coding theory, difference sets, finite fields, finite geometry, operations research, and group theory. He was a driving force behind the two-volume Design Theory (jointly with T. Beth and H. Lenz), widely regarded as an encyclopaedic and classic reference work. More than 25 years ago (with R. Mullin and S. Vanstone) he recognized the opportunity for a forum bridging the disciplines of design theory, coding theory, and cryptography, and remains active as editor-in-chief of the resulting flagship journal Designs, Codes and Cryptography. He is a leader of the community through his organization of numerous conferences and workshops, and his tireless behind-the-scenes support and mentoring of junior colleagues.

The Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications is an international scholarly society that was founded in 1990 by Ralph Stanton; the ICA was established for the purpose of promoting the development of combinatorics and of encouraging publications and conferences in combinatorics and its applications.

It will be the 20th edition of this conference held in Italy--the first one in 1981, the second in 1982, and every two years ever since--with the participation of many experts in finite geometries and their applications from all over the world.
