The Ralph G Stanton Scholarship at University of Manitoba

The Ralph G. Stanton Scholarship

In 1970, Ralph G. Stanton came to the University of Manitoba from York University to launch the Department of Computer Science. This innovative new area of study created excitement on campus when over 600 students signed up for the first freshman course.

The projects developed in the first year included the following: programming languages, algorithmic methods, numerical analysis, social impact of computing, and much more. Ralph G. Stanton also created the first Computer Science co-op program.

The number of undergraduate and graduate students interested in the program continued to grow. As of September 2016, there are 722 students in the Department of Computer Science’s programs. This was a 28% increase from the previous year. The current ratio of students is 85% male and 15% female.

Full course tuition for a domestic student is approximately $5,000 with books and supplies estimated at $2,000. International student tuition rates are substantially higher at $16,300.

The biggest challenge for Computer Sciences students is the lack of student awards available. There are currently only eight undergraduate scholarships (value range $600-$3,750) and four undergraduate bursaries (value range $700-$2,500). Currently, there are no awards to specifically support students in the co-op program.

To address this need, we are creating the Ralph G. Stanton Scholarship in honour of the founder of the Department of Computer Science.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 to establish this award. An anonymous donor has offered to match gifts totaling up to $11,000 to make this scholarship a reality.

The Ralph G. Stanton Scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student who
• is in their 3rd or 4th year of the Computer Science Program
• has a GPA of 3.00 or more
• is a participant of the co-op program

In 1970, he came to the University of Manitoba to start the Department of Computer Science. He became a Distinguished Professor in 1984 and received the Killam prize in mathematics in 1985. In addition to his love of mathematics and science, Ralph G. Stanton spoke several languages and had a fondness for Portuguese literature.
